I`m really sad that I can’t be there but our editor Malka will give us a detailed backstage coverage after the conference.

“There are times where mystery is more important than knowledge”

JJ Abrams (LOST, Cloverfiled, the new STAR TREK) talks about his obsession to mystery.
And he’s even funny.

While some media reactions to the Apple Keynote presentation were dissappointed because Steve Jobs had no new jesus-like gadgets to show, the effect on the online movie business could actually be tremendous.

Itunes now has a serious movie rental system. The big suprise is that every major film studio participates!

Movie rentals cost from 3-5$, but you only can watch the film for 24 hours from the point you start it. When the service will launch in february (USA only) it’ll have around 1000 movies. I think that’s not enough to really reach big user groups, we want all the full back catalogues, too! So it’s not the big breakthrough but having all studios onboard is the first important step to really get online movie rental going!

Apple also improved the AppleTV, now becoming a serious home entertainment device.

Right after putting the post about IndieMaverick online I learned about a similar site called IndieGoGo via CinemaTech.

There are some differences to IndieMaverick, for example they are financing short films, while IM only supports feature film projects. Read all the details on the “How it works” Page.

I’m very curious how these sites want to reach the critical mass to really finance a project. What do you think?

The Indie Maverick website is rather ugly but the concept shows the right way for the future of movie financing. Filmmakers can present their project on the site and users can buy shares starting from 25$. As long as the aspired budget is not raised the investors can pull out the money, but when the estimated budget is reached, the film gets produced. Read the details here.

“Here at Indie Maverick we recognize that the costs of making films are dropping thanks to new technologies, but there are few avenues for filmmakers to raise their budgets other than hit up family and friends for their $50,000 budget.

We thought we would design a site that brought the funds of the world community to these filmmakers to help them get their films made and allow small investors the ability to share in the profits. Films like Clerks and Blair Witch were made for tiny budgets and made huge profits at the box office.

If Indie Maverick can help the next generation of filmmakers realise their films and can make some money for investors then we have succeeded.”

There is a new project up on keyframe.org - Cinema in the digital Age:

“Life is a Remake. This film is a work in progress. Day by day it is growing, changing length as well as storyline. It is a diary, an essay film, a documentary and a fiction film at the same time. And it is a homage to Kurt Schwitter’s Merzbau.”

Minivegas
has done some channel idents for S4C. They have devoloped a setup which reacts to the voice of the anouncer, so that every ident is a little different. In the piece “Lights” for example the lights get triggered on and off by voice parameters.
