Well, that millions of internet videos need editorial selection is no secret. That’s probably the reason why everyone is talking about Joost these days. But until this big player leaves the beta status and opens up the doors for public, you can check some independent WEB TV stations.

PSST! 2

“The mission of PSST is to produce original short films through the collaboration of different teams of designers, directors, and animators. Each film is comprised of three sections produced by three different teams. This process is the whole idea behind PSST! – a technique derived from the Dadaist game of Exquisite Corpse and the children’s game Telephone and applied to the arts of motion graphics, animation and film-making.”

The first PSST Project had six films and was released in July of 2006.
PSST! 2 was released in March of 2007 with nine films.

Mario Klingemann spoke at the OFFF festival this weekend.
He presented some of his digital found footage experiments, where he uses data from the internet and recombines them in his flash experiments. The piece Flickeur is very atmospheric and suggestive, creating a very poetic work of net art.

Flickeur (pronounced like Voyeur) randomly retrieves images from Flickr.com and creates an infinite film with a style that can vary between stream-of-consciousness, documentary or video clip.”

Island of Consciousness is a further development of the concept, together with sound artist Oleg Marakov.

Today a prerelease of the ARD/ZDF Onlinestudie 2007, the survey about the Internet usage of the german public, was released. 62,7 % of the german population uses the Internet, 3,2 % more than 2006. An interesting detail of the survey are the measurements of the online video usage. 16 % of the online users watch video content at least once a week. That’s a rise of almost 100 % compared to the last year. See the press release here. (german only)

Axe has a new Interactive Video Website online.

It’s beuatifully shot (very raw, digital) and has a very nice fullscreen option. But as many video sites these days it lacks real interactivity. The only choice for the user is to click on “Let the game continue” once in a while. Therefore he story gets boring, because the plot gets repepitive (boy meets girl). What rescues the site from being odd is the very ironic tone know from all Axe campaings.

OFFF, the 3 day Festival for digital creation culture in Barcelona starts today!

It’s a wonderful festival with an impressive list of speakers and a very nice venue in the middle of the city. They cover subjects ranging from motion graphics to web design and progressive technologies. Last year they invited me to show my short film Palindrome there. This year I can’t go there, but to console me (and all of you guys:-), the OFFF-team together with NTMY have set up a site to provide you with photos, interviews and updates from the festival.

I recognized a new trend for product websites latletly - many companies present there product range in a very ironic way. The trend started with last year’s award-winning ShaveEverywhere, where a charming host in a white bathrobe introduces you to the stunning features of a new type of shaver. Followers have been the Friends of Bright, telling you that a whitening gum helps you to step on the bright side of life, or the Great Pockets campaign, which offers you a whole fashion line with huge pockets to carry all your digital devices, just to tell you that you don’t need those clothes, if you have all devices in one Nokia mobile phone.

Bananageddon - Save the Monkeys!

Almost bringing it to the absurd is the new site Save the Monkeys. (Slogan: “You must stop eating bananas - bananas are for monkeys. Save the monkey - save the world!”) The promoted product is a protein drink - got the connection?

The remaining question is, if the visitor always has the attention and patience to get the connection between the ironic campaign and the product. What do you think about it?

Yugop developed the Eye Project for japanese telecom company KDDI. Customers can send videos or pictures from their mobile phones to the website, where they become integrated into a moving mosaic.

In the Archive section, they used Papervision 3d to map the mosaic onto a threedimensional shape. Papervision 3d is a open source 3d engine for Flash.
